Our Emotional Intelligence (EI) expert Jeremy Marchant talks with Dave Harries about EI and implementing it in the workplace. Jeremy is one of our DISCiples and has been working in Emotional Intelligence for years, building his company emotional intelligence at work since 2004.
In this podcast, Jeremy describes EI as having the “understanding that all of our behaviours are driven by our emotions and our feelings and our beliefs.” Having high Emotional Intelligence is having the ability to understand, use and manage your own emotions to be able to improve your communication and diffuse conflict within the workplace.
Jeremy is an expert at implementing EI in the workplace and states that “if we want to change our behaviour, to be better in business, then we have to address [our] underlying feelings and thoughts.” If we are aware of how we feel and can successfully address those emotions, then we will be able to understand our mindsets and work towards changing them. Jeremy further mentions that to be truly successful “we have to be aware and understand how [other people’s] emotions and feelings are driving their behaviour.” To be able to recognise different mindsets we have to understand what causes other people to act and behave the way they do in different situations. If we are able to do this, then we can learn how to stretch into other mindsets and improve our own Emotional Intelligence.

A Quick note on EI & EQ
We get asked this question a lot – At DISCsimple we refer to Emotional intelligence or EI rather than EQ. Very simply EI is refers to the ability whereas EQ speaks to the measurement.
Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to monitor one’s own emotions, as well as those of other people, to discern between different emotions, and to label them appropriately. It is an ability and so can be practised and improved.
Emotional Quotient or EQ is the measurement we use to describe our level of ability to understand and apply our own minds emotionally.
