Spot That D Style!

Spotting the Styles D

We meet new people in business all the time, and post pandemic we have not been meeting as many people face to face. However, it is still important to be able to strike up relationships with others. Often our first encounter with people is over social media either Facebook, LinkedIn, or Instagram, we only get to see our online personas. We are masters of selling ourselves and many profiles lose their authenticity as we aim to portray a certain type of person and not necessarily are real selves.

So how can DISC help us fast track a relationship when we aren’t always presented with the right information?

Over our next series of blogs, we are going to provide tips and hints about who you are talking with. People shouldn’t be pigeonholed as we are all a blend and can display elements of every style. However, the DISC model can really help provide a guide and starting point to someone’s preferred working behaviours.

D Style – Doers or Dominant Style

You can identify styles from the language they use, their emails, actions, and interactions. At DISCsimple we find that the Everything DiSC® ‘D’ style Dominant descriptor can sometimes upset people so we prefer to use the word Doer instead!

How do we spot a D style?

D’s are fast-paced and task-oriented. They prioritise challenge, results and action.

DISC model D Style

They tend to will focus on ROI, results, and money where they will mention specific figures.

A D’s email will be professional, brief and to the point. They will say what they need, what they want, and when they need it done by. It is unlikely that there will be an introduction and definitely no small talk or pleasantries. D styles will focus on the essential information, nothing more, nothing less.

On social media, a D’s interaction is purposeful and intentional. They will have strong opinions and might not elaborate. Any comments or posts by a D style tend to have very few words and drive towards some form of action.

Style spotting can be difficult and there is no substitute for getting to know someone face to face.

In person, you can identify a D style by a strong, firm, and brief handshake. They will be well dressed and tend not to wear anything flashy or colourful. They will speak clearly and will generally take charge of the conversation. If they are interested in what you do, they will show it. They expect straightforward answers and quick results and will get frustrated if you don’t do what you are expected.

When it comes to style spotting, there are some signs that will clearly indicate where a person’s preferences lie.
