DISC Style Spotting on Social – How to Read Personalities Online and Build Powerful Connections

all you need is love (and a disc profile)

By Sandra Rowell:  Associate of DISCsimple

Ever felt like you can see someone’s personality through their posts?

The colour of their clothes. The tone of their captions. The vibe of their message.

You’re not imagining it — you’re witnessing DISC in action.

DISC style spotting is one of the most powerful tools I teach in leadership, business growth, and self-awareness. And social media? It’s the ultimate training ground.

Let me show you what I mean…

What I Noticed While Scrolling…

One evening, I was mindlessly scrolling through Instagram and LinkedIn. Nothing unusual — just catching up.

Then I saw her.

A bright yellow blazer. A huge smile. Video playing.
“Hey friends! Just popping on to share what’s been lighting me up this week!”
Heart emojis everywhere. Comments like, “You’re amazing!” and “Love your energy!”

I smiled.

Then I scrolled again.

Black and white photo. Sleek, minimal layout.
“3 steps to optimise your workflow for Q2.”
Clear. Efficient. Zero fluff. Just value.

Next?

Soft pastels. A peaceful photo of a walk in the woods.
“Some days are slower than others. That’s okay.”
Gentle words. Dozens of warm, caring replies.

And finally?

Red header. Bold statement.
“Results matter. Here’s how we increased revenue by 28%.”
Decisive. Strong. All business.

That’s when it clicked:
I wasn’t just scrolling — I was DISC style spotting.

Each post revealed more than just preferences. It reflected:

  • Personality
  • Communication style
  • Leadership energy
  • And what really matters to them

Because I understand DISC, I didn’t judge.
I didn’t compare.
I understood — and appreciated.

And that’s when I realised…

This isn’t just a fun skill.
It’s a powerful way to connect. To communicate. To lead.

So, What Exactly Is DISC Style Spotting?

DISC is a behaviour profiling model that helps us understand how people tend to communicate, work, and connect.

It’s based on four core personality types:

  • D – Dominance
  • I – Influence
  • S – Steadiness
  • C – Conscientiousness

Style spotting is about observing how these styles show up online, through:

  • Visuals
  • Words
  • Tone
  • Frequency
  • Energy

It’s not about boxing people in — it’s about unlocking insight.

D Style – Dominance

What You’ll Spot:
✔ Short, punchy captions
✔ Bold colours or strong postures
✔ Posts about results, goals, and performance
✔ Fast-paced, no-nonsense tone

Translation:
“I get things done. What’s next?”
These are your action takers, challengers, and high-performers.

I Style – Influence

What You’ll Spot:
✔ Bright, expressive photos
✔ Emojis, casual language, exclamations
✔ Reels, stories, engaging Q&As
✔ “Hey guys!” energy

Translation:
“Let’s have fun! Look what I found!”
These are your connectors, storytellers, and cheerleaders.

S Style – Steadiness

What You’ll Spot:
✔ Calm, consistent visuals
✔ Behind-the-scenes, day-in-the-life posts
✔ Thoughtful, heartfelt captions
✔ Soft palettes and a gentle tone

Translation:
“I’m here for you. Let’s grow together.”
These are your loyal, dependable, nurturing supporters.

C Style – Conscientiousness

What You’ll Spot:
✔ Structured posts (e.g., step-by-step guides)
✔ Clean, professional layouts
✔ Data, research, or systems-focused topics
✔ Formal tone and attention to detail

Translation:
“Here’s the right way to do it.”
These are your planners, experts, and perfectionists.

Why It Matters — Especially Now

In a world of fast content and surface-level impressions, DISC brings depth.

Style spotting helps you:

  • Connect faster with new people
  • Stop misreading tone or intention
  • Create content that speaks to all styles
  • Become a more compassionate, confident communicator

This isn’t just for business owners or coaches — this is for anyone who wants better relationships.

3 Steps to Start Style Spotting Today

Want to give it a try? It’s easier than you think.

  1. Scroll With Purpose

Open LinkedIn or Instagram. Pick 5 posts that catch your attention.

  1. Ask Yourself:
  • What kind of energy is this giving off?
  • Is it bold or gentle?
  • Detailed or spontaneous?
  • Focused on people or results?
  1. Match the Style

Assign one of the DISC types based on what you observe.
Don’t stress about being “right” — just get curious.

Most people are a blend — so see if you can spot the dominant energy.

What You See Is So Much More Than a Post

DISC Style Spotting trains your brain to see people with more compassion and curiosity.

You stop assuming.
You stop judging.
You start understanding.

Imagine what that could do for your:

  • Client relationships
  • Team dynamics
  • Marketing strategy
  • Self-awareness

Once you see it, you can’t unsee it — and that’s a superpower.
